Study methods

Studying may not come as naturally to some as to others.  A vast amount of information to be studied may also be overwhelming and cause anxiety.  Some learners may also be more visual in nature where others may learn better though hearing information.  Some personality types prefer an active approach to learning.

Through one on one sessions preferred methods of studying are identified and practiced.  Coping skills for exams are also given and practiced.

Mathematics assessment Grade 1-6

Some children have an inborn predisposition for math, whereas others may not have this predisposition.  In other words, math comes easy to some children and not so easy to others.  Some needs to work hard and others a lot harder when it comes to mathematics.  Through one on one math assessment all the areas a learner is struggling with are identified and explained.  Additional exercises are given to practice the concepts.

Play therapy

According to an article written by Tara M. Hall, Charles E. Schaefer and Heidi G. Kaduson, play therapy has been a well-established and popular way of treating children for more than 60 years.  A reason way play therapy has proven to be a very useful tool with children is that children have not yet developed the abstract reasoning abilities and verbal skills needed to adequately articulate their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.  For children, toys are their words, and play their conversation.

Elize follows a Gestalt approach in play therapy which was created on the idea that children must be understood in the context of their ongoing relationship with the environment.  According to Gestalt theory, the most important area of concern are the thoughts and feelings that children are experiencing at that moment in time.  The main goal of Gestalt therapy is the deepening of awareness, which promotes a sense of living fully in the here and now.

During a play therapy session, the things that are bothering children, in other words the things that causes them to act out or withdraw for example, comes out through play.  This allows the child to then talk and express his/her feelings.  The child and Elize then focus on ways how to better cope with the situation.

Career counselling

In our modern day and age there are a lot of career options available to us which makes it difficult for the youth of today to make an appropriate career choice. The aim of career counselling is to help youth and even some adults to choose appropriate careers in which they can succeed and be happy.

Elize does an extensive career evaluation and planning with the learners or adults wherein she links learners possible career choices with their subjects.

The following Career media might be included in the assessment:

  • True colors personality questionnaire
  • General Scholastic Aptitude Test (GSAT)
  • 19 Field interest inventory
  • PHSF Relations questionnaire
  • Self-directed search questionnaire
  • South African vocational interest inventory (SAVII)
School readiness assessment

A child is considered school ready, ready to go to grade one, when believed to be able to cope with the formal demands of schooling.  These demands are not only intellectual but also emotional, perceptual and conceptual.  But school readiness assessment will no longer be used as a tool to determine school readiness but to determine areas a grade R learner may be struggling with in order to improve these areas to help grade R learners to have the necessary skills needed for grade 1.

Learners from six to ten years old who may be struggling between grade R and 3 may soon be pushed through primary school without repeating a grade, as Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, proposes a new progression and promotion policy.

In her basic education budget vote speech (https://www.gov.za/speeches/minister-angie-motshekga-basic-education-dept-budget-vote-201819-9-may-2018-0000) for the 2018/19 financial year, Motshekga explained that a number of experts in education have given their expert opinion on the matter and they believe that is doesn’t make educational sense to make children, ages six to ten, repeat a Grade.  According to Motshekga the experts stipulated that children who repeat a grade gains nothing.

By using the battery of school reading assessments, Elize identifies areas that grade R learners may be struggling with and give them exercises and activities to improve these areas in order to cope with the demands of grade 1.

Individual counselling

What is Individual or Personal Psychotherapy?

Our lives today are very different from the lives our parent and grandparents lived.  The fast-paced and more stress-ridden era brings with its unique challenges.  Through individual counselling, the counsellor and the client establish a collaborative relationship and agree on areas to work on and outcomes the client wishes to achieve.  Individual counselling focuses on resolving concerns and problems, in a safe, judgement free environment where the focus is on the client.

Remedial reading

A base line assessment is done to determine the learner’s reading level as well as areas of reading difficulties for example confusion of the letters d and b. Sight words are also recapped. From easy sight words to more difficult sight words, according to the learners abilities. Reading is practiced on a one on one basis for one hour to increase or even maintain a learner’s reading level. Letter confusion and any reading difficulties are worked on in a fun and playful way.
